Steno Method

It is important for students to have all required equipment, software, and books prior to their first day of class.
Steno Machine:   The following are recommended steno machines that may be purchased or rented:

• Luminex CSE
• Elan Cybra
• Stentura Protege
• Infinity Traditional
• Wave

If you have another model you would like to use, just ask the admissions department for our advice.  Steno machines may be purchased at discounted prices at: www.stenoworks.com, www.acculaw.com, https://www.stenograph.com/student-writer-packages or www.geminiwriter.com. 

Transcription Software:  Students must also purchase the student version of a computer-aided transcription (CAT) software program. This software provides the technology that translates the language of your steno theory into English.  The software will require a Computer Operating System: PC-based system running Windows 8, 10, or higher. (Apple/Mac computers running Windows are not acceptable.)  Please choose one of the following:

Voice Method

Equipment and Software - The following are required for purchase:

• Version 16.0 of Dragon Professional ("standard" edition).
  IMPORTANT: Purchase the Dragon Professional "Standard" software.  DO NOT purchase "anywhere," "academic," "legal," "medical," "law enforcement," or other named editions.

  You do not need to include accessories and should just purchase the "Basics." Some students prefer the "mouth only rubber face piece" instead of the cushion that comes with the mask. • Required Textbook: EV360 Educational Solutions - Voice Reporting. A pdf of your book will be provided in the course site. The cost of the book will be charged to your student account.

Computer with the following minimum specifications (NOTE: Students have had issues with HP and Acer models, so consider other models):

• • Processor: i7 or higher
  • Hard Drive: solid state or 7200 rpm Rotational Speed
  • RAM Memory: minimum of 16 gigabytes.  32 GB or more memory is even better.
  • At least two USB ports (one being designated for the USB sound card needed).

NOTE: Students have had technical issues with HP, Acer, and Lenova models. Dell models with the minimum specifications are strongly recommended based on technical issue logs.

IMPORTANT: Technical support from the college cannot be provided if computers do not have the minimum specifications.

• Microsoft Word or other equivalent word processing software.

Case CATalyst VP Transcription Software:  Students must also purchase the student version of a computer-aided transcription (CAT) software program. This software provides the technology that translates your voice theory and formats your transcripts. The software will require a Computer Operating System: PC-based system running Windows 11, or higher.
